For better or for worse?

Sterne poses a good point when he says, "Either the new technologies are going to transform everything for the better or for the worse." Except, I think technology is only "for the better". We live in a day where these communicative technologies aren't going to be for the worse. Technologies make life easier; wouldn't you rather write an e-mail then hand write a letter? If you're "for the worse", you are probably old and ignorant and didn't take the time to learn a new technology. I find it hard to see technology going "for the worse" when our school systems are filled with brand new computers, everyone knows how to e-mail, and every kid over the age of 8 is carrying a cell phone. (the list goes on) These communicative technologies will continue to advance, and make life easier to the point where everyone knows how to use them and we won't have to worry about "for the worse".

Maybe I read Sterne a little differently but I got the overwhelming sense that Sterne's argument was that neither a technophobic nor a thecnophilic ideology are particularly useful. Instead we should be concerned with HOW it is used. I think this is also consistent with the class discussion about resolving the technological determinism and the sypmtomatic camps - you can't really just focus on one side.
